What is Summer Swim Team?
Foothills
Tennis and Swimming Club is a member of the Peninsula Swim Association
(PSA), a summer recreational youth swim league. Foothills swim
team helps kids and teens improve their technique and build strong bonds with their teammates under the direction of a head coach and several assistant coaches. Swimmers work together at
practices, encourage each other at meets, and have a blast at team
social events throughout the summer. They compete in five dual club meets, a relay meet, and the Championship Meet.
Goals for Summer Swim Team are to:
- encourage and promote swimming, improve strokes and techniques, promote good sportsmanship, and build self-esteem.
- develop and foster friendships and team unity through activities that increase team spirit.
- encourage greater team involvement by older swimmers ages 12-18.
- have fun!
Who can participate?
Foothills members up to 18 years old are welcome to become Foothills Dolphins. They must be able to swim the length of a 25-yard pool to compete in meets.
About meets and practices
Swimmers are encouraged to attend as many practices as possible, but coaches understand your children's busy schedules. Practice uniforms should include a comfortable swimsuit that will not fall off when diving. Swim caps are recommended for swimmers with long hair. Goggles will help eyes that are sensitive to pool chemicals. Practices
are divided into four age groups: Guppies (beginners 8 &
under), Stingrays (7-8), Piranhas (9-10), & Sharks (11-18). A swimmer's practice group is determined by his/her age on June 1st.
Each
swimmer can participate in up to three individual events and one relay
at a dual meet, as well as two individual events and one relay at the
Championship Meet. Swimmers compete with others of the same age and sex.
Parent involvement is vital and required for participation.
For those of you new to the summer swim league experience, participating in swim meets is a FAMILY AFFAIR! Being a Foothills team parent is a lot of fun and a great way to get to know other Foothills families.
Parents run the swim meets -- we don't bring in hired professionals -- and the result is a true family gathering. It takes about 60-70 people total to run each meet. Both clubs provide volunteers to fill these spots.
We expect every family to offer a parent volunteer to work at the meets as follows:
- at least 3 FULL regular meets and one social activity. If a family does not sign up for the required number of jobs, then we will assign a meet and job to them.
- If your child(ren) compete in the Relay Meet or Championship Meet, you will be required to help staff those meets as well.
